"Congo"

Our first champion - and the dog that cemented our love for this breed.  Congo was everything an Akita SHOULD be - noble, kind, gentle, and loving.  His name means "Gentle Giant" - and that describes him perfectly.  The alpha dog at Akitas CAS until he retired and turned his reins over to Zanadou, Congo ruled without a fight and loved more then anything else babysitting the new puppies.

Congo went everywhere with us, to shows, to the in-laws for Sunday dinners, through airports, and for show and tell when our kids were in grade school - with second graders swarming him.  He loved every second of it.  He never met a stranger and he was friendly towards everyone and everything.  The only criticism I heard about him was that he was  not "aloof" enough, as the standard calls for.  It was true, he was not an aloof Akita, nor was he aggressive towards other dogs.   But I always knew he was all Akita, and would protect me if necessary.   When I describe the ideal Akita temperament, I use Congo's story for my example.  Akitas were bred to think for themselves, and they should have a good inner ability to judge character.  One day a man that I'd never met called and said he had gotten my name from my vet and he wanted to come by to look at my dogs.  When he arrived, Congo walked over to greet him, wagging his whole body as usual, but when he neared the man he stopped - and his hackles went up.  He jumped up and placed his front feet on the man's shoulders (Congo was close to 6 feet tall when he stood up on his hind legs) and he growled, then he walked back to me on stiff legs, placing himself between me and this man with his head lowered - staring at the man.  I'd never seen him act like that before, and in his 13 years, I never saw him act like that towards anyone again.  He did not bite the man, but he definitely warned him, letting him know that if he wanted to make a wrong move towards me, he would have to come through him first.  And that is exactly the way an Akita SHOULD be - protective if necessary, but just a big goofy love if not.  Congo exemplifies the temperament we want all of our Akitas to have.

We at Akitas CAS work to keep that proper temperament as first priority in our breeding program.  We want the whole package - a sound, beautiful dog that is able to attain his championship easily in the toughest competitions.  But we always know that no matter how pretty and sound the dog is, if he does not have a proper temperament - a dog that can be a beloved pet FIRST - then he is not a proper Akita or a dog we would consider breeding.  Below are more photos of Congo:
